How to cancel Spotify Premium
Published
The single most useful fact about cancelling Spotify: you can’t do it inside the mobile app. The cancel button lives on the website, which is why so many people give up halfway and stay subscribed by accident.
Cancelling Premium
- Sign in at spotify.com/account in a browser.
- Open your subscription or plan section.
- Choose to cancel Premium and confirm.
Premium runs until the end of the current billing period. After that you drop to the free tier rather than losing the account: playlists, saved music and followers all survive, you just get ads and lose offline listening.
If Spotify doesn’t bill you directly
- Student or partner bundles. If Premium came bundled with another service or through a carrier deal, cancel through whoever actually charges you.
- Family plan members. Only the plan manager can cancel the plan; members leave the plan instead.
- App-store billing. Rare for Spotify these days, but if the charge on your statement comes from Apple or Google, cancel in that store’s subscription settings; the iPhone steps are here.
Worth knowing
Spotify’s flow will offer you a pause or a discount on the way out; take it if it genuinely suits you, but remember a paused plan quietly resumes. If you’re pruning several services at once, work from your real yearly total rather than cancelling one at a time as they annoy you.
Common questions
What happens to my downloaded music?
Downloads stop working offline as soon as Premium ends, because they are licensed rather than owned. The playlists themselves survive on the free tier, and the downloads come back if you resubscribe.
Can I get a refund for the current month?
Usually not; Premium simply runs to the end of the paid period. If you subscribed within the last 14 days and are in the UK or EU, statutory withdrawal rights may still apply, so ask Spotify support rather than assuming.
How do I leave a family plan I do not manage?
Members leave the plan from their own account page; only the plan manager can cancel the plan itself. Leaving drops you to the free tier and keeps your library intact.
Does deleting the app cancel Premium?
No. Deleting the app removes nothing but the app. The subscription keeps billing until you cancel it at spotify.com/account, or wherever your biller is.
