How to cancel Netflix

Netflix bills nearly all members directly, so for most people the cancel button is on netflix.com, not in your iPhone’s subscription list. Netflix stopped signing people up through Apple’s billing years ago, which is why it almost never appears in Settings.

Cancelling a direct Netflix subscription

1. Sign in at netflix.com in any browser.
2. Open your profile menu and choose Account.
3. Under Membership, choose Cancel Membership and confirm.

Streaming continues until the end of the period you’ve already paid for, so cancelling early costs nothing. If you rejoin later, Netflix keeps your profiles and viewing history for a while, so you don’t restart from zero.

If you pay through someone else

Two common exceptions:

• A very old Apple-billed membership. If Netflix does appear in Settings, your name, Subscriptions, cancel it there like any Apple-billed subscription.
• A bundle or carrier. If Netflix is part of your mobile plan, broadband or TV package, the billing lives with that provider and so does the cancellation.

Not sure which you are? Check where the charge appears: a line saying Netflix on your card statement means direct; an Apple charge or a line inside your phone bill means one of the exceptions.

Worth knowing

Netflix cancellations take effect at the period end, not immediately, and there’s no partial refund for unused days in a normal month. If you’re cancelling to dodge an upcoming price rise, do it before the renewal date shown on the Account page; a reminder two days before is the reliable way to make that happen.
