How to cancel HBO Max

HBO Max subscriptions arrive from more directions than most: directly from the service, through Apple or Google, or bundled by a TV or mobile provider. The charge on your statement is the map: the service’s own name means direct, Apple means App Store, and a provider’s name means the provider owns the cancellation.

If you’re billed directly

  1. Sign in on the HBO Max website in a browser.
  2. Open your account or subscription settings.
  3. Choose to cancel and confirm; access continues until the paid period ends.

If you subscribed through Apple

Settings, your name, Subscriptions, tap the subscription, cancel. The general iPhone guide applies, including the rule that deleting the app changes nothing about billing.

If it came from your TV or mobile provider

Bundled subscriptions cancel with whoever bills you, through the provider’s account portal or support line. The streaming app itself often can’t end these at all, which is confusing by design rather than by accident.

Worth knowing

  • Ad-supported downgrades save most of the money if price is the issue; look for the plan-change option before the cancel button.
  • Streaming services in this tier are strong candidates for rotation: subscribe for the show, cancel at the finale, return next season. Nothing is lost in between, and a renewal reminder turns rotation from an intention into a system. If you rotate several streamers, one list with all their dates is the difference between a plan and a mess.

Common questions

What happens to my downloads when I cancel?

Downloaded titles stop playing at the end of the paid period. They are licences tied to an active subscription, not files you keep.

Can I get a refund if I cancel right after a renewal?

For direct billing, generally no; access simply runs to the period end. If Apple bills you, refunds go through Apple's own request form at reportaproblem.apple.com, which is judged case by case.

Is there a way to pause instead of cancel?

There is no official pause on a direct subscription. Cancelling and resubscribing later is the practical equivalent, and your profiles and watch history normally survive the gap.

How do I work out who bills me?

Check the name on the charge, not the app. The service's own name means direct, Apple means the App Store, and a TV or mobile provider's name means the provider owns both the billing and the cancellation.
